1- Issue:
At a time when social, political, ecological and economic society is undergoing rapid change, it is essential to rethink and anticipate the contemporary world. This project seeks to define new dynamic forms of organization and programming related to our world. It seeks to condition new ways of living and learning together. Internet technology with its tools such as the Smartphone or the laptop, have changed our way of life. These evolutions force us to rethink and redefine our environment. The relationship between objects is larger than the objects themselves. Space and time depend on the observer, so space is informal, there is no established rule or fixed model to copy.
LOOPING THE PROGRAM
Looping allows for optimization of the space; the space becomes legible and easy to practice for visitors and staff.
OPTIMIZING THE LOOP
The library is organized organically around a circle, it is formed using two gentle slopes creating an endless circulation, like the infinity symbol ∞ folded in on itself.
The spaces are organized around and fit into each other allowing a fluidity while creating buffer spaces of intimacy.
Around this sequential path are organized multi-functional spaces (places / non-places). The evolution will be done according to the users.
This will lead to propose programmatic and spatial strategies on a human scale.
FIVE INSTITUTIONS – ONE BUILDING
We seek to allow a maximum of interdisciplinarity while preserving the autonomy of individual art forms and institutions.
Each institution is an independent unit that must be able to evolve with its exhibitions, host its special events, and have its own hours of operation without disturbing the other units.
For the shelving portion of the library, we propose to use the “bookBot”, an automated system for delivering books to users. This highly efficient solution allows for a reduction in costs and storage space, which in turn allows for a larger budget to be allocated to the various common and private areas of the library.
The complex is organized around an “Oasis” formed by water basins, green spaces and plantings. This “Oasis” allows for the tempering of the internal public areas of the library. As for the storage spaces for works and books, they meet the standards imposed for optimal protection and conservation.
The climatic protection of the building is organized under a dome with a square base made of reinforced glass concrete and fiberglass forming a geometric grid that allows natural light to filter through.
The reinforced glass facades also provide perfect thermal insulation and optimal natural light.
The facades are composed of mirrored glass slats to control the light, and the slats allow for natural cooling of the building’s facades.
The whole project is designed to be in connection with its environment while protecting itself from it! The project is designed to have the maximum LEED certification.
